Which Hennessy Hammock Should I Buy?

A Hennessy hammock is a complete shelter tent that comprises of a hammock bed, a rainfly or tarp cover, mosquito mesh, and long, suspender ropes all in a price of one. It is commonly used by campers who see it more convenient to bring a whole tent than a hammock with stand. It is also a regular companion by research expeditionists who make camp to such sensitive places like the Amazon, the Nile, the Arctic, and other areas where climate and environment are at the extreme.

If you’re planning to go on an exciting adventure, bringing safety gears such as the Hennessy hammock should be your top priority. This review will tackle 5 of the best Hennessy hammocks for any of your camping needs. Best wishes! //Amanda and Jared

Which Hennessy Hammock is the Best?

Hennessy Hammock Expedition Series

the best hammock review

Hammock Dimensions: 120”L x 59”W
Rainfly Dimensions: 63” x 99” parallelogram; 132” diagonal
Rope Dimension: 120”
Height Limit: 6 ft. tall
Weight: 2 lbs.
Weight Capacity: 250 lbs.
Materials: 70D Oxford Nylon hammock; 70D Polyurethane Coated Polyester Ripstop rainfly; Polyester ropes

Pros:
Elastic mesh cover

Cons:
Might be uncomfortable for users above 5’11”

Bottom line:
The best Hennessy hammock to buy for first-time users

The Expedition Series is the most basic Hennessy hammock, but its performance is far from being basic. Campers love to use this Hennessy hammock as a tent. It is lightweight and definitely outweighs a tent on the ground in terms of being bugproof and rainproof.

It’s constructed with a patented asymmetrical shape that ensures a comfortable position when lying diagonally.  The same asymmetrical rainfly protects the sleeper from falling leaves and rain. We’ve tried this hammock when it was on hype, and I must say that the hype is justified.

Sleeping on it increases that camp excitement because it lets you feel the unique breeze of the wind that you can only get when you’re hanging from the tree. The No-See-Um mesh works well by protecting yourself from swallowing a bug, and it absolutely needs our deepest appreciation!

Talking about quality, the Expedition Series is top-notch.

The only problem that we encountered is it’s really not for stomach sleepers because it wraps you like a banana and it keeps you from moving a lot. Losing balance is the main problem of a cocoon type of hammock so it is advisable that you only sleep on your back or side.

It was a nice experience in general, and if you opt for a hammock that doubles as a hanging chair for your camping, this one is certainly the best choice.

TIP:  To keep the rainfly from holding too much water, tie the ridgeline very tightly and spread it evenly.

Features to Note

The most popular variant of Hennessy hammock comes with all the necessary accessories that you can get from a single purchase:

  • Two 10 ft. suspending ropes
  • Heavy-duty double slider YKK zipper (for Expedition Zip)
  • Long, Polyester webbing straps to protect tree barks
  • Polyester netting mesh cover
  • Polyester ripstop rainfly
  • Stuff sack for easy transport

Hennessy Hammock Scout Series

the best budget hammock review

Hammock Dimensions: 112″L x 59″W
Rainfly Dimensions: 70” x 84” parallelogram; 80” x 130” diagonal
Rope Dimension: 120”
Height Limit: 5’8” tall
Weight: 2 lbs.
Weight Capacity: 150 lbs.
Materials: 140 High-Density Nylon hammock; 70D Polyurethane Coated Polyester Ripstop rainfly; Polyester ropes

Pros:
Larger rainfly

Cons:
Suspension ropes are not for bigger trees

Bottom line:
The safest Hennessy hammock with Atlas straps to be used by kids

The Scout Series (Zip) uses the original non-asymmetrical shape but updated with few modifications. Its rainfly is now larger than before, but still features a slightly asymmetrical shape which offers greater coverage for your feet and head. Nylon hammocks tend to get cold in a cold environment, so it is recommended that you complement it with a sleeping bag inside.

Scout kids and young rangers are the most common users of this hammock, and we’ve seen them get excited a lot getting in and out of their hanging “house”.

Choosing a Hennessy hammock with classic or zip variation of this series might be confusing to buyers, and my advice is that you must always choose the zip one (unless you dislike the kid you’re going to give it to). The Scout Classic features a bottom entry, which is convenient if you exit but very difficult to enter to.

It also uses Velcro strips that can catch with your hair. The Scout Zip uses a side zipper entry, which for me, is a lot easier to enter to and exit from.

How to set up a Hennessy hammock like this one requires more than 5 minutes but once you get used to it, you can do it less than that. Do not let kids set this hammock up all by themselves as the safety and comfort of their hammocking relies on the assembly as well.

TIP: If you’re using a Hennessy hammock for camping in a windy area, use a few stakes to anchor the hammock and rainfly on the ground. Ordinary tent stakes will work by tying a rope a bit on the hammock and rainfly before staking it on the ground.

Features to Note

The Scout Series provides comfort and security to young or petite users. It has a low weight capacity which is originally intended for kids. It still has the same quality as the other Hennessy hammock series with same accessories at a lower price:

  • High-density nylon waterproof hammock fabric
  • 30D Polyester mesh netting as bug protection
  • Two 10 ft. 1200 lb. tested suspending ropes
  • Heavy-duty double slider zipper
  • Low stretch, 42” tree huggers
  • Large asymmetrical rainfly
  • 100” ridgeline for balance
  • Stuff stack included with printed instructions

Hennessy Hammock Jungle Safari Zip

the highest rated hammock review

Hammock Dimensions: 144″L x 59″W
Rainfly Dimensions: 143” centerline; 120” hexagonal
Rope Dimension: 120”
Height Limit: 7 ft. tall
Weight: 4 lbs.
Weight Capacity: 350 lbs.
Materials: Double Layer of 40 D Nylon hammock; 70D Polyurethane Coated Polyester Ripstop rainfly; Polyester ropes

Pros:
Hennessy hammock for tall person; durable for years

Cons:
Needs a bigger rainfly

Bottom line:
A Hennessy hammock for 2 persons with a high weight capacity

The Jungle Safari Zip is made from the sturdiest fabric which makes this variant suitable for heavy-sized users. It is Hennessy’s biggest hammock that combines the good qualities of the Deep Jungle XL and Safari Deluxe Zip but in a significantly lower price. This hammock is also great for regular-sized couples as it has enough room for two persons to be comfortable together.

It uses a unique hexagonal rainfly that covers all parts of the hammock; however, it might be shorter depending on how far you want to hang it away from your hammock. The fabric of this model has double layers with an opening from each side in which you can place a reflector pad inside.

We recommend this hammock if you’re planning on using a Hennessy Hammock in cold places for you can always customize it to give you warmth and comfort on those cold nights.

TIP: You will need a reflector pad if you want to be cozy and warm inside your hammock. The Radiant Double Bubble Pad XL is made specifically for this model!

Features to Note

Although this is listed as the most expensive in this list, the Jungle Safari Zip isn’t actually the priciest among the Hennessy Hammock series. We chose this as our top three with reasons like customizability, worthiness of the price, and the following:

  • Highest weight capacity Hennessy hammock
  • Double layer bottom fabric
  • 42” long, 2” thick webbing straps
  • Durable mesh denier material
  • 10 ft., 2700-pound tested suspending ropes
  • Hexagonal rainfly
  • Sets up within 3 minutes
  • Stuff sack included

Hennessy Hammock Explorer Ultralite Series

Hammock Dimensions: 132″L x 59″”W
Rainfly Dimensions: 72” x 110” parallelogram; 118” x 136” diagonal
Rope Dimension: 120”
Height Limit: 7 ft. tall
Weight: 2 lbs.
Weight Capacity: 250 lbs.
Materials: 70D nylon taffeta hammock; 30D PU/Silicone-coated nylon ripstop66 rainfly; Spectra ropes

Pros:
Lightweight; easily packed

Cons:
Takes a while to set up

Bottom line:
The most versatile hammock for tall people

The Explorer Ultralite Series is perfect for hikers who constantly change camps. It can take several minutes for first-time users to set this up on a tree, but once you figured it all out, it will be easy peezy further on. This is our recommended hammock to places where it’s constantly raining. It’s because the tarp is made from silicone-coated nylon or silnylon which makes it waterproof and extremely tear-resistant yet keeping it lightweight at the same time.

Tall people will enjoy this hammock as it has enough space to spread their feet on. However, people over 250 pounds might need another series that can hold up their weight safely. It is also stable enough for side sleepers to lounge on comfortably, but then again, it’s not meant for stomach sleepers.

TIP: Always be careful when you zip and unzip. There have been some instances where the zipper caught the mesh cover and ripped it.

Features to Note

If you frequently go on a trail where rainfall is relentless, the Explorer Ultralite should be your pick. It’s ultimately weather-resistant without having to pay additional bucks:

  • Made from outdoor-made nylon taffeta fabric
  • 20D polyester mesh netting
  • Two 10 ft. 1500-pound tested suspension ropes
  • 42-inch long, 1.5-inch thick tree-hugging straps
  • #5 YKK zipper with 2 double sliders
  • Stuff sack for easy package

Hennessy Hammock Leaf Lounger XL

Hammock Dimensions: 130”L x 59”W
Rope Dimension: 120”
Height Limit: 7 ft. tall
Weight: 1.56 lbs.
Weight Capacity: 300 lbs.
Materials: 70D Nylon hammock; Polyester ropes

Pros:
Lightweight; cheap price

Cons:
No rainfly included

Bottom line:
The best hammock for hot places

If you only meant to camp in a place where rainfall is not frequent and the climate is mostly hot, the extra large Leaf Lounger is the ideal hammock. It doesn’t include a rainfly, as it’s only meant to be used as a lounger for light napping, sitting, or reading. Of course, its uses don’t limit to that, it would depend on how you intend to make it to good use.

It’s packable into a lightweight sack, perfect for changing camps. It has a built-in gear loft on the ridgeline where you can put your belongings while you sleep. Its quality is as durable as the other Hennessy hammocks, and we’ve never seen any of this variant ripped over the years. It will absolutely stay with you for many seasons, provided a proper care.

The Leaf Lounger XL is perfect to be used by tall people that weigh up to 300 pounds.

TIP: This hammock is ideal for a hot climate, but it doesn’t mean that you lay it directly under the sunlight. Extreme sunlight can weaken the nylon material and fade its color.

Features to Note

You can get this budget Hennessy hammock at a very low budget but you still get these cool features that are unique to the Hennessy hammocks:

  • Low stretch polyester rope measuring 10 ft. in length and tested at 2100 pounds
  • 42 inches long polyester webbing straps to protect the tree barks
  • 70D high-density nylon hammock fabric
  • Packed lightly at 11 inches long
  • Includes a polyester ripstop bag
  • Structural ridgeline for a perfect set up

What is a Hennessy Hammock Snakeskin and Why is it Important?

A snakeskin is a stuff sack system that gathers on each end of the hammock rope which is helpful in collapsing the whole hammock without having it touch the ground or fold it yourself.

It is not necessary for using a Hennessy hammock but if you want a super easy disassembly, you might want to purchase one or two. It comes in different sizes depending on the size of your hammock. The rainfly also needs its own snakeskin as it is bulkier than the hammock bed.

How Far Apart Should the Trees Be to Get the Minimum and Maximum Sag?

If you’re using the Expedition or Ultralight Backpacker series, you must hang both the hammock and fly between a distance of 12 to 25 feet. The Explorer and Safari series require 13 to 26 feet to get the minimum and maximum hang.

How to Hang my Hennessy Hammock?

Be reminded that before you tie your hammock on trees, the farther their distance is the higher the hammock will get. It is suggested that you choose two trees that have the distances mentioned above. Once you’ve found the perfect trees, tie the hammock at a chair length from the ground so it will be easier for you to enter to and exit from it.

Hennessy Hammock Classic or Zip Model?

These models differ in their entrances. The classic model has an entryway on the bottom of the hammock which is fastened by Velcro straps. It is preferable by those who are not comfortable in sitting-lying entry method that the usual hammock demands. The zip model, on the other hand, has a zippered entryway on the side— between the mesh net and the hammock bed. This is ideal for those who get their hair tangled by the Velcro straps of the classic models.

How to use a Hennessy Hammock as a Chair?

You heard it right. You can make a furniture out of your Hennessy hammock! Just follow these steps:

  • Set up your hammock fully as the instructions suggested.
  • Release one of the side elastics that was anchored to the ground.
  • Fold the hammock in half when the released elastic is brought on the other side.
  • Sit down on the folded hammock and make sure that it is balanced.

How do you Keep the Rainfly on the Right Tension?

Once you’ve set up your rainfly along the hammock, tie each corner and side on bushes or on the ground to keep it as taut as possible. Use a stake if you want to anchor it on the ground. If all these are nonexistent, use the automatic fly tensioner and clip each funnel on the O rings of the fly. These funnels can also be doubled as a water collector by tying two same litters of plastic bottles onto them. It keeps the fly on the right tension, it keeps it from keeping the water as well.

Concluding this Hennessy Hammock Comparison

In deciding which Hennessy Hammock is the best, it was easier to bring out each individual quality every one of the different models has. It is easily concluded that you can use the Hennessy hammock in the rain, in windy places and the harshest conditions – The question you have to ask yourself now is: Which Hennessy Hammock should I buy?
