Best Size of a Deck Box for Storage and Sitting?
The size of a deck box can say how much it can store. Meaning, if you get a small box, you would most likely store small, lighter stuff in there.
Small Deck Box. Small boxes can take 31-50 gallons and their dimensions usually range from 22 x 15 inches in width and depth. You can store cushions, tarp cover, or some light to medium weight outdoor tools.
Medium Deck Box. Medium boxes can store 51-80 gallons which means that you can put medium-heavy stuff like pails, shovels, or 3-seater cushions.
Large Deck Box. A large box can store 81-100 gallons and it can accommodate almost anything ranging from hammocks or a small hammock chair.
Extra Large Box. Enormous boxes have great storage capacity from 101 gallons above. They are used to store heavy outdoor equipment like a lawnmower or maybe a durable steel hammock stand.

A Guide for the Best Deck Box Material
Before you purchase a deck box, you should learn what a deck box is made of so you can arrive with a decision whether you’re okay with it or not.
Resin. This is the most widely used material of a deck box due to its cheap price and solid construction. Resin feels more like plastic, but it actually is a composite blend of high-density polyethylene which is a harder type of plastic that is used in bottles and lumber. HDPE Resin has an advantage of being weather-resistant, waterproof, and can get the looks of a wooden furniture. There are also waterproof resin wicker hanging chairs
Wicker/Rattan. Wicker deck boxes are the style of weaving used in many traditional pieces of furniture while rattan is the material used for weaving. You should look for this material if you want a more durable and lighter deck box.
Wood. This common material is generally more expensive and heavy, but they complement the natural setting very well. They are not waterproof. If looks and quality are what you aim for, wood boxes are preferable.
Plastic. Hard plastics are also used in deck boxes and just with any other storage boxes. They are generally cheaper and lightweight. If you opt for the price and portability, a plastic deck box is a great choice.
Can Resin or Plastic Deck Boxes be Painted?
No. As tempting as it is to revamp our old furniture to make it look brand new, this cannot be done with plastic or resin deck box because paints wear off quickly. There are types of resin or plastic that can take acrylic- or latex-based paints.
Unfortunately, all the products above are not appropriate for these materials.
Can I Leave My Storage Deck Box for Cushions Outside All-Year Long?
Depends on the material, a deck box may or may not be ideal to be left outside. A plastic or resin deck box can be left outdoors during winter without expecting to damage it but if it is rainy season and they are not completely waterproof, leaving them outside is a bad idea, even if you for example store a waterproof hammock with a stand inside of it.
Wood or rattan deck boxes are totally not moisture or waterproof, and it is ideal to keep them in a shaded area where moisture can’t get inside. All of them are sunproof though, which means that it is fine to leave them outside in a direct sunlight.
The only material that is not sunproof about wood or rattan deck boxes is their color or finish which can be faded over time. Here is another fun guide of things you can use for storage!
Is there a Deck Storage Box with Lock?
It’s not uncommon finding a storage deck box with a lock, but just be sure that the lock is well-made before you store things that would be too valuable to lose. Remember that a lock more often than not signifies that there is something to protect inside, so if you only store things with a low value, consider not using a lock to not risk any damage if you only use your deck storage box for cushions.
